Tetra Pak Printmaking
Wednesday, August 27th, 1pm-5pm
Instructor: Emily Runnerstrom

Tetra Pak printmaking is a simple way to become acquainted with intaglio print processes. While other intaglio processes such as etching and drypoint often employ the use of metal plates and sharp tools, Tetra Pak packaging (used for packaging food and drink) is used for the printing plate and tools as simple as ballpoint pens are used to create the printing image. In this class students will design a print and create a small edition during this class. All supplies included.

Calling all book and zine artists, printmakers, and paper aficionados! From 5:30pm to 8:00pm every final Thursday of the month bring your own supplies and latest project to join others in the book art and zine community for an evening of creative community for no charge. OR for a small fee, register for a mini lesson taught by Root & Runner owner Emily Runnerstrom, beginning at 5 pm. In August the lesson will cover the construction of a twisting, turning FLEXIGON!

A la Monet - Painting in the Style of Claude Monet
Friday & Saturday, August 29th & 30th, 10am-4pm both days
Instructor: David Wollangk

Impressionism was one of the most revolutionary art movements in modern history and Claude Monet was one of its most important masters. Once derided by critics and traditionalists, Impressionist artists influenced generations of artists through their innovative use of color to capture light itself. In this two day hands-on art history lesson, students will explore the materials, colors and methods used by Impressionists to produce a water lilies painting in the style of Monet. All supplies included, There will be a break for lunch both days.

This class will be taught in oil and is for students with previous oil painting experience. Instruction will not cover oil painting basics.

Value & Color Techniques - Three Day Class!
Thursday - Saturday, September 4, 5, & 6
9am-Noon each day
Instructor: Darcy Doiel

A solid understanding of color theory is valuable for artists in all mediums, and in this class you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in color! Students will meet September 4th, 5th, & 6th from 9 am to noon each day. By meeting three times for short classes in stead of one long day, students will be better equipped to absorb and apply the concepts taught, and will gain an understanding of color theory through a variety of exercises.

This course covers techniques for color mixing to achieve desired effects and emphasizes skills for portraying light, shadow, and depth to bring art to life by exploring the color wheel, color relationships, and how to create harmonious palettes. The techniques taught over these three days will focus on refining skills rather that producing a final piece and will equip your artist's toolbox with the tools you need to tackle color and value challenges with ease!All supplies included.

Tatting

Thursday, September 11th, 5:30pm-8:30pm

Tatting is a delicate kind of lace work that utilizes a shuttle to create the signature knots and loops of tatted lace. A wonderful pocket hobby, all the supplies and tools of this method are compact enough to take anywhere! In this class, students will make a tatted lace bookmark in the process of learning this method and will take home two tatting shuttles to continue their exploration of this lovely craft. All supplies included.

Family Day - Paper Fish
& Open Studio
Saturday, September 13th, 12pm-3:30pm

Drop in anytime between 12pm and 3:30pm on Saturday, September 13th to make a special paper fish using unusual papers - better yet, bring the whole family and make a whole school of fish! Swim on over for this fun paper craft!

Not in the mood for fish? You are invited to use our studio as your studio! Bring your current project and use our space for the day!!

Long Stitch Journal
Wednesday, September 17th, 1pm-5pm
Instructor: Emily Runnerstrom

There is something special about hand bound books. Books bound using the long stitch binding technique are not only beautiful but sturdy and open flat, making them excellent for use as sketchbooks. Book artist and Root & Runner owner, Emily Runnerstrom will teach students this book binding technique and students will leave class with one finished leather or wool felt cover book. Vegan Options available with notice. All supplies are included in the class fee.

Artistic Plastic - Fusing Plastic Bags
Thursday, September 18th, 2pm-4:30pm
Instructor: Stephanie Leisering

From trash to treasure, turn plastic shopping bags into a reusable, sturdy, and quirky material by fusing them together. The material made from fused plastic bags can be made into tote bags, wallets, book covers, and so much more. In this class students will learn how to turn single-use plastic bags into material that can be used in a variety of ways to lengthen its useful life in fun and colorful ways. Your instructor for this class is Stephanie Leisering of Funky Remnants. During class students will learn the fusing process and make enough material to sew a simple tote bag during class. All supplies are included in the class fees but students are welcome to bring colorful plastic bags from home.

Watercolor Monotypes
Friday, September 19th, 3pm-6pm
Instructor: Lisa Baltes

Part watercolor, part printmaking, and completely inspirational! This class combines watercolor painting materials in unexpected ways. This class is perfect for watercolor aficionados who wish to experiment with their materials, anyone who loves a good printmaking method and all those art rebels who like breaking the rules! Omro artist Lisa Baltes will instruct students in the process of making painterly and abstract floral monotypes with watercolor paints and watersoluble crayons. All supplies included.

Carved Eraser Stamps

Saturday, September 20th, 1pm-3:30pm
Instructor: Michelle Sharp

Many people are familiar with linocuts, a printmaking process in which an image is carved into linoleum to make a stamp. In this class, students will use a similar process to carve their own rubber stamps using erasers! Students will learn how to use gouges to carve rubber erasers into designs of their choice.

Fold Formed Copper Feather

With criss-crossing plains and interesting movement, the flag book is an intriguing book art structure that allows for diverse creative expression. In this class students will learn how to fabricate this unusual book art form, and complete at least two flag books of their own.

Working from life is an important skill for any artist seeking to capture a realistic and engaging human likeness in their art. Root & Runner offers portrait and themed life drawing sessions on the last Saturday of the month. Bring your own art supplies and $15 (to pay model fees) and join us for three hours of figurative art practice in our studio.

Bleach Dyeing in Textile Design

Friday, October 3rd, 1pm-4pm
Instructor: Stephanie Leisering

In this class we will be using bleach and a deColourant to paint, stamp or stencil designs on a black and dark fabrics. You will learn several techniques like tie-dyeing, stenciling and painting to create a beautifully bleached design on your tote bag. We will also discuss safety precautions while working with bleach and how to neutralize the bleaching process. We will provide the materials you need for this class, but you are welcome to bring additional dark or black 100% cotton items of clothing to try bleach dyeing with.

Slow Stitching & Visible Mending

When those perfect blue jeans wear out or you find a hole in your favorite tee shirt, don’t throw them away. That’s the time to engage in some slow stitching and visible mending! In this class participants will learn basic techniques to mend your favorite textiles in meaningful and artistic ways. All supplies are included and participants are encouraged to bring in an article of clothing they wish to revive.

Bat Automata

Just in time for Halloween, learn how to make a flying bat automata! An automata (also known as an automaton) is a mechanical toy that moves using ingenious, and often simple engineering mechanisms. In this class participants will learn how to fabricate the mechanism that makes a bat fly! All supplies are included in this class and we welcome families with children to sign up together for an enjoyable Saturday of creating!

Chinese Thread Book

Zhen Xian Bao or Chinese Thread Books are a traditional women’s folk art in China. A way to store thread, needles, and other embroidery materials, they are composed of multiple layers of folded compartments. Chinese thread books are interesting and unique book-like structures with abundant creative potential. In this class, participants will learn how to make the folded compartments and combine them into a thread book of their own composition. All materials included.

Simple Bottle Cap Fish

Friday, October 17th, 10:00am-4:00pm

Create a quirky and colorful fish sculpture using a carved wood form and bottle caps! Don’t let the simple materials fool you. In this class students will learn valuable skills in material manipulation to take common supplies to an artistic level. Students in this class will complete one fish sculpture during the class and may just be inspired to make a whole school! All materials are supplied but students are invited to collect and bring unique bottle caps to add to their sculpture.

Wet Felted Wool Vessels

It only takes a few simple materials to make lushly tactile, colorful, and creative felted wool vessels, perfect for containing both special and mundane objects in an artistic way! Neenah fiber artist Kandace Werner will teach students the fun techniques needed to take fluffy wool to functional objects. All supplies included.

Class Cancellation Policy

Due to limited studio space, class cancellations must be made at least 1 week prior to the scheduled class. This gives us an opportunity to fill the space. You may cancel by email, phone or by dropping by Root & Runner Creative Space.

If you need to cancel your class:

If class cancellations happen more than one week prior to the class date, you have two options

1.) To retain the full value of your registration, we will offer the full class price in credit toward a future class.

2.) In the case you do not wish to put your registration fees towards a future class, Root & Runner Creative Space will retain 25% of your registration fees if you cancel more than one week before the class date. If you cancel less than one week prior to the class date, you forfeit any remuneration.

We do not prorate classes/workshops. If you are unable to attend 1 day of a multi-day workshop, there are no discounts.

If Root & Runner Creative Space initiates a class cancellation due to inclement weather, instructor unavailability, or any other reason, students will be reimbursed in full.
