Private Classes & Parties

If there is a class you want to take but it doesn't fit into your schedule OR if you are interested In arranging a special creative gathering, we are able to offer a select group of classes by request!

  • Private classes and parties are available for students 14 years of age and older. Some classes may be appropriate for students ages 11-13 but pre-approval from the instructor is required. Younger students must be supervised and aided by a responsible adult for the entire class.

  • Private classes & parties must be scheduled a minimum of one month prior to the scheduled class/party date.

  • Food and beverages (including alcohol for adult groups) are permitted at parties. All food, beverages, eating and serving utensils are the responsibility of the organizing party.

  • Bonus! For the person who organize classes of 6 or more students, they will take the class for FREE! Contact us for more information about this perk.

  • Is there a class that you for a private class or event but you can't find it in the list below? Let us know and we will see what we can do. Not all instructors are able to offer classes by request but we are happy to investigate for you!

How to Schedule a Private Class or Party
  • Fill out the form below and we will contact you to get the ball rolling!

  • To arrange a private class or party for 1-4 people, the standard Root & Runner Creative Space Class Cancellation Policy applies. After receiving the request, we will contact you at which time please share the names and email addresses of everyone in your group. We will send a payment link to every student for online payment. If preferable, students are welcome to pay class fees in person.

  • To arrange private classes or parties for 5-12 people, a non-refundable deposit in the amount of one student's registration is required to reserve your date and time in the Root & Runner schedule. After receiving the request, the event organizer will be sent a link to pay the class deposit. The remaining class fees will be collected the day of the class/party.

  • In the case that Root & Runner cancels the event due to weather, instructor illness, or other unavoidable event, every effort will be made to reschedule. If rescheduling is not possible, Root & Runner will offer a full refund of all collected fees.

Bottle Cap Fish Sculpture

Create a quirky and colorful fish sculpture using a carved wood form and bottle caps! Don’t let the simple materials fool you. In this all day class students will learn valuable skills in material manipulation to take common supplies to an artistic level. Students in this class will complete one fish sculpture during the class and may just be inspired to make a whole school! All materials are supplied but students are invited to collect and bring unique bottle caps to add to their sculpture.

Two Day Class

In this two day class, students will learn both simple material manipulation and involved metal working techniques to create a one of a kind fish sculpture. All materials included. Class will break for lunch on both days.

Fold Formed Copper Earrings

Instructors: JoEllen Wollangk

Fold forming is a simple art metal technique that produces wonderful organic shapes that mimic the folds of fabric and can resemble organic shapes like leaves or feathers. In this class students will make a pair of copper earrings (provided ear wires are surgical steel) or two pendants (chain not included) using this surprisingly simple technique

Viking Knitting

Instructors: JoEllen Wollangk

Viking Knitting is an ancient technique in which wire is knit into a cord. Elegant and unusual, the resulting cord is used for jewelry and other embellishments. In this class students will complete one bracelet in this method using copper wire.

Hidden Message Jewelry

Instructors: Emily Runnerstrom

Using glass and semi precious stone beads, Morse Code, and some creativity, students will make jewelry that expresses affection, a private joke between friends, a personal motto, or a sassy comment. All supplies included. Students will complete a necklace or bracelet during class.

Embroidered Lichen Artwork

Instructor: Emily Runnerstrom

Come explore the imagery and aesthetic of lichens, moss, and maybe even mushrooms through fiber art! Participants in this class will enjoy an afternoon of stitching an abstract artwork inspired by these primal plant forms. Students will plan out their artworks and then create them using provided linen, embroidery thread, vintage silk and semi precious stone beads to create a truly special work of art. All supplies included, however, students are welcome to bring special supplies of their own to incorporate if they desire.

Bleeding Tissue Dyed Silk Scarves

Instructor: JoEllen Wollangk

Using bleeding tissue to dye fabric is a simple way to dye fabric that yields vibrant results. In this class students will learn this technique to complete one scarf. All supplies are included. Additional scarves will be available to purchase for students who wish to make more.

Eco Printing on Silk

This class is available from June through October.

Instructor: JoEllen Wollangk

Using nature for inspiration AND as art supplies, students in this class will use flowers, leaves, twigs and other natural items to color and create patterns for their own unique, one of a kind silk scarf. Students will complete one scarf during class and will have the opportunity to purchase additional scarves. All supplies included.

Simple Books

Using minimal materials and surprising techniques, students in this class will learn several simple book binding techniques that inspire great creativity.

Japanese Stab Binding

Instructor: Emily Runnerstrom

Japanese stab binding is a traditional bookbinding technique originating in Japan, Korea, and China noted for the decorative stitching along the spine. This method is perfect for binding loose sheets of paper together and produces an elegant, visually appealing book. Students in this class will bind two books in this method. All supplies included.

Long Stitch Book Binding

Instructor: Emily Runnerstrom

There is something special about hand bound books. Books bound using the long stitch binding technique are not only beautiful but sturdy and open flat, making them excellent for use as sketchbooks. Book artist and Root & Runner owner, Emily Runnerstrom will teach students this book binding technique and students will leave class with one finished leather or wool felt cover book. Vegan options are available upon request, but must be made a minimum of 2 weeks prior to class. All supplies are included in the class fee.
